Bitbucket의 PR 목록에 충돌이 표시되며, PR의 overview 화면에 충돌여부가 표시된다.

Overview > “More Information” 링크를 클릭하여 Bitbucket 에서 제공하는 충돌 해소 가이드를 확인한다.

Eclipse를 이용한 충돌 해소 절차

Step 1) 소스 브랜치 체크아웃

Project 우클릭 > Team > Switch To > 머지 소스 브랜치 선택 (목록에 없다면, Other… 선택 후 Remote Tracking 에서 찾아 선택) > Checkout (처음 checkout 하는 경우 > Check out as New Local Branch)

Step 2) 병합 목적지 내용 가져오기

Project 우클릭 > Team > Pull… 선택 > Reference 입력란에 master 입력

충돌이 발생한 파일을 수동으로 병합한다.

바이너리 파일 병합 충돌 바이너리 파일의 경우 에디터로 병합하지 않고, 파일을 덮어쓰기한다.

Git은 컴파일 오류를 유발고 눈에 띄게 할 목적으로 conflict이 발생한 부분을 <<<<<<< ====== >>>>>>> 로 표시한다.

복잡한 conflict이 발생한 경우 Eclipse에서 제공하는 merge 기능이 유용하다.

Project (또는 conflict이 발생한 파일 선택) >> Team >> Merge Tool

Merge 도구를 통해 수동 merge가 필요한 파일과 위치를 찾을 수 있다.

Merge 도구 메뉴:

아이콘 배치의 순서대로,

수정을 완료하고 파일을 저장한다.

Step 5) 병합 결과 커밋 & 푸시

Merge 한 파일을 Staged Changes 창으로 이동시키고 “Commit and Push” 또는 Commit 한다.

녹색의 MERGED 표시는 소스 브랜치가 목적지 브랜치에 머지됨을 표시한다.

If there are different changes on both the remote and the local branch, instead of just pulling the master by git pull , I rather would do:

git pull –rebase

I even have it in my default config so that it will always will do a rebase if required on git pull :

git config –global pull.rebase true

A rebase avoids a merge commit and keeps your changes on top of the current remote branch.

Yet you still have to resolve any occurring merge conflicts when different people are working on the same branch, which is a bad practice especially because it leads to conflicts.

(Also be aware that in the scope of a rebase, the meaning of theirs and ours is switched.)

In cases with minor changes, yours are just applied on the top.

You are changing the history, yet only your local one, not the remote’s.

You won’t need to git push –force . You just git push it as you are used to it.

In general, you should be working on feature branches and merge those back to the master branch.

When working on feature branches one can also keep the feature branch close to the master by:

git checkout feature-branch git fetch && git rebase origin/master

Yet here one would need to git push –force the feature-branch, so one should be careful not to use this strategy if more than one person is working on the same feature-branch.

‘CONFLICT(충돌)’이라 나오는 것을 보니 자동 병합에 실패한 것 같습니다. 앞서 각각의 브랜치에서 변경한 내용이 myfile.txt 의 같은 행에 포함되어 있기 때문입니다. 실제로 myfile.txt 의 내용을 확인해 보면 다음과 같이 변경되어 있습니다.

Let’s assume there are two developers: Developer A and Developer B. Both of them pull the same code file from the remote repository and try to make various amendments in that file. There are two points when a merge can enter a conflicted state:

1. Starting the Merge Process

If there are changes in the working directory’s stage area for the current project, merging won’t start.

In this case, conflicts happen due to pending changes that need to be stabilized using different Git commands.

2. During the Merge Process

The failure during the merge process indicates that there is a conflict between the local branch and the branch being merged.

In this case, Git resolves as much as possible, but there are things that have to be resolved manually in the conflicted files.

We will now go over resolving merge conflicts in Git.

There are a few steps that could reduce the steps needed to resolve merge conflicts in Git.

Demo: Resolving Git Merge Conflicts

First, initialize two repositories:

git init A git init B

Add the remote address in the A repository:

git remote add origin *address*

The next step is to pull all the changes in the central repository to the local repository.

git pull origin master

Follow the same process to add the origin in the B repository.

git remote add origin *address*

The pull command is executed again to retrieve all the content from the remote repository and move it to the local repository.

git pull origin master

Both of these repositories represent two different repositories of two different developers.

Let’s get back to the A repository.

cd ../A

In the A repository, a readme file is opened in order to make various changes.

vi README.md

Make the necessary changes in the file, and then save it.

The git status command is then executed in order to see the reflected changes.

git status

The next step is to add these changes to the staging area and commit them.

git add. git commit -m *commit message*

After the commit is finished, the changed file is pushed to the remote repository.

git push origin master

Now, return to the B repository.

cd B

Open a readme file

vi README.md

Make changes to the file, save it, and close it. After that, add the changed file and commit it.

git add. git commit -m *commit message*

The next step is to push the file to the remote repository.

git push

An error is shown, meaning that the updates are rejected.

Next, we need to execute:

git — rebase origin master

Currently, there are visible conflicts that need to be resolved manually.

If you want to skip this commit, you can type git rebase –skip, or if you want to abort this rebase, you can type git rebase –abort.

After managing this conflict manually, we will open the merge tool.

git mergetool

After we input this command, all of the files will be processed.

These are all the processes and the modifications done in the file.

You can see three different files there, and you can see everything that was added or removed.

After scrolling, you can verify where exactly the conflict happened.

You can then decide if you want to continue with this particular file or not. I will proceed with removing that line.

Manual modifications have allowed us to resolve file conflicts. Save the file and close the final file.

git rebase –continue

Now, when the conflict is resolved, we must be able to push the file to the remote repository.

Handling a Git Pull request with merge conflict

When working with Git, the relatively complex tasks are issuing a pull request and then merging with conflicts. Due to the prevalence of UIs, pull requests are now quite simple. However, merge requests that have a conflict are a little bit more hard to handle. Here’s how I get this done.

In this example, let’s work with 2 branches:

prod (the final source of truth)

feature-1 (the branch issuing pull request)

Step 1: Verify your local repo

To start off, ensure that you have the latest files for the prod branch.

git checkout prod git pull origin prod

This will ensure that the files on local repository are in-sync with your remote git repo (Github/Bitbucket, etc).

Step 2: Switch to branch

The next step is to switch to the branch that you want to merge. While doing it, ensure that you also pull the latest files from your remote server.

git checkout feature-1 git pull origin feature-1

Step 3: Try to merge

At this point, we have the latest files for both the “prod” and “feature-1” branch locally. You are also on the branch that needs to be merged. Now try this branch to your target branch/master.

git merge prod

You should see output like this:

Auto-merging origin_settings.py CONFLICT ( content ) : Merge conflict in origin_settings.py Auto-merging aggregator.py Automatic merge failed ; fix conflicts and then commit the result.

So git is saying that:

File aggregator.py has some change but, it can be merged with no conflict.

File origin_settings.py has some changes that overlap. There is a merge conflict and it cannot automatically merge the change.

Git would have also tried to merge the files and added the conflict related information to the file that has issues. In this case, it is a file named origin_settings.py.

Step 4: Resolve the merge conflict

To resolve the conflict, open the file and look for lines like this:

data = open ( ‘cert2.txt’ ). read () cert = TLSCertificate () <<<<<< HEAD print cert . loadCertificate ( data ) ====== prod # print "hello world" In this case, git says that the line to print “Hello world” from prod branch was over-written with a different print statement in the branch. Manually, you’ll need to fix this. So in my case, I fixed it this way: data = open ( 'cert2.txt' ). read () cert = TLSCertificate () print cert . loadCertificate ( data ) Step 5: Check in changes Now, commit the fixes to the branch. git add origin_settings.py git commit -m "some comment" git push origin feature-1 Step 6: Merge the branch At this point, the conflicts should be gone. You can now log in to your remote server like github or bitbucket and hit the merge request. Once this completes, the pull request is automatically marked as complete.
