In 2021, a 24-character URL is way too long. Fortunately, YouTube lets creators choose a custom address for their channel. It comes in handy nowadays, especially if you want to build a recognizable brand on the platform.
Creating a custom URL is quick and easy. But before we show you how, you should know whether you meet the requirements to do so. If you’ve completed these three steps, you should have no problem setting up a custom YouTube URL:
Attract 100 subscribers to your channel. Have a channel that’s at least 30 days old. Add a banner and profile icon to your channel.
If you’ve already done these things, congratulations! You’re ready to brand your YouTube channel with a custom URL that’s catchy easy to read.
How to Create a Custom YouTube URL
First, find YouTube’s customization page in the YouTube Studio. This is where you’ll be able to adjust the layout, basic info, and branding on your channel.
Follow these steps to reach the selection page:
On your channel’s homepage, click your profile icon and select YouTube Studio from the drop-down menu. Click Customization in the left navigation menu. On the next page, click the Basic Info tab. Scroll down until you see the Channel URL header.

At this point, you’ll see two custom URL options. The first will be a default URL that closely matches your channel name. Of course, it’s not always possible to claim this URL. Your channel name may be the same as someone else, which means they’ve already claimed the URL you want.
If that’s the case, use the second URL option. This will let you type in a custom URL that best represents your channel, as shown below:
When you’re finished, click Publish to save your changes and confirm ownership of the URL.
How to Remove a Custom YouTube URL
If you make a mistake when choosing your custom URL, don’t worry. You can always remove it in four easy steps:
Return to YouTube’s customization page and make sure the Basic Info tab is selected. Scroll down until you see the Custom URL header. Click Delete right below the text box showing your current URL. The next thing you’ll see is the About Me page on your Google account. In the about section, click the icon beside your current URL. On the next page, click Remove and follow the steps in the previous section to create a new URL.
To clarify, creating or removing a custom URL doesn’t replace the random URL you’ve always had. This collection of characters is your channel ID, and it will always be attached to your account. Setting up a custom URL just keeps it from appearing in your channel’s web address.
Also, you may see /c/ in your URL from time to time, but don’t worry about it. You don’t need to include it in your address when sharing it online. Simply typing YouTube.com/yourchannel works just fine!
In 2021, a custom YouTube URL can set you apart from the competition. Other creators may choose to keep their alphanumeric address, but they won’t have the advantage of full branding. After all, no viewer wants to hear, “Subscribe to my YouTube channel at YouTube.com/xTCyaRn56LrjSsY12145TyBq.”

If you’ve had your channel for a while, chances are it qualifies to have its own custom URL, and you can claim one in a few simple steps.
Or, if you’ve set a custom URL and want to change it, there’s an easy way to remove the one you have and claim a new one.
YouTube channels are never stuck with their URLs permanently. That wasn’t always the case, however. For many years YouTube didn’t let channels make changes once they selected a custom URL.
Now, channels can change their URL up to three times per year. And the process is the same every time.
This article covers both how to select a custom URL for the first time, and how to change a custom URL that’s currently in place.
First, let’s look at the eligibility requirements.
Custom YouTube URL Eligibility Requirements
To create a custom URL for your YouTube channel your account has to meet the following requirements:
Have 100 or more subscribers.
Be at least 30 days old.
Have an uploaded profile picture.
Have uploaded banner image.
These are modest requirements by any estimate, but they do prevent new channels from setting custom URLs immediately.
If you came here looking for a way to create a URL for a channel that was set up an hour ago, that’s not going to be possible.
Wait at least 30 days, accumulate 100 or more subscribers, and then move on to the steps in the next section.
There’s one caveat to setting custom URLs, however, which is that they’re not completely custom.
When going through the URL selection process YouTube will suggest several available options based on:
Display name
YouTube username
Current vanity URLs
Linked website name
Presumably YouTube does this to prevent URLs from being indistinguishable from the channels they belong to.
You can tailor YouTube’s suggestions by setting your display name to something you’d like your URL to be.

Sign In to YouTube Studio
To set a custom URL for your YouTube channel, start by signing into YouTube Studio.
Select Customization
From the left navigation menu select Customization, and then select Basic info.

Under the Channel URL heading select the option to Set a custom URL for your channel.
A box will pop up where you’ll see the customized URL YouTube suggests for you based on your channel details.
You’ll be given the option to add extra letters or numbers to further customize the URL.

YouTube channels can change their custom URL up to 3 times per year.
To change the URL of your YouTube channel, start by signing into YouTube Studio.

What Are Custom YouTube Channel URLs?
YouTube Channel URLs by default are usually a string of numbers and letters and difficult for any human being to remember like the one below:

This is never a useful way to present your channel to your audience. Instead, you need a URL that is easy to read and represents your channel properly. Take a look at the below example.

The Guide
Step 1: Navigate To The Settings Cog
In the right-hand corner of your screen, you’ll see your profile image. Click on this image and in the scroll through the drop-down options to the “Settings” cog.
Step 2: Click Advanced Settings Link
Having clicked on the Settings menu, you will be taken to a new screen where another settings tab will appear on the left-hand side of the screen.
This will include the following options seen in the below screenshot. Click on the last menu option, “Advanced Settings”.
Step 3: Find Your Custom URL In The Channel Settings
Under Channel settings, you will either see a sentence stating “You’re eligible for a custom URL” or a sentence stating “Our Custom URL system has changed”.
This is because YouTube has recently updated the criteria that you must meet to be eligible:
Have 100 or more subscribers
Be at least 30 days old
Have an uploaded photo as channel icon
Have uploaded channel art
Are You Eligible For A Custom URL?
Once you are eligible for a custom URL for your YouTube Channel, you will be able to choose what that URL is t be. For example, it could be based on your display name, YouTube username or the name of your linked website.
The capitalisation of letters within your custom URL does not cause any issues. If the URL is all lower case or all upper case, both will send the user to the same place channel.
Good To Know:
You can’t change a custom URL after creation. However, you can remove the custom URL from your channel and claim a new one if you want to change it. Google
Important:
Once you remove a custom URL it may become free to be claimed by another creator. In general, a YouTube channel may only have one (1) custom URL and custom URLs cannot be transferred or assigned to anyone. Google
If You’re Eligible…
If you are found to be eligible by Google, you’ll usually be notified on email, by notice in your Advanced Account Settings and a notification in the Creator Studio dashboard. You’ll then want to claim your custom URL.
Step 4: How To Get Your Custom YouTube Link
Before you start: Keep in mind that you can’t change a custom URL after creation. Remember once you custom YouTube URL has been approved you won’t be able to change it. So make sure you are completely happy with your choice before clicking confirm.
However, you can remove your custom YouTube URL up to 3 times per year.
Go to your advanced account settings by clicking your icon in the top right-hand corner and clicking the Settings or cog icon. Click Advanced Settings in the setting navigation on the left. Under ‘Channel Settings’, select the link next to You’re eligible for a custom URL. You’ll only see this link if your channel is eligible. In the ‘Get a custom URL’ box, you’ll see the custom URL(s) for which you’ve been approved. You can’t change the part in the grey box, but you may need to add a few letters or numbers to make the URL unique to you. After reading the ‘Custom URL Terms of Use’ tick the box to agree, then click Change URL. Click Confirm.
If you’re having trouble accessing the ‘Get a custom URL box’ try changing browsers! It’s a known bug that Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari experience issues, so try using Internet Explorer 11 instead.
Step 5: Remove The “/c”
If you see a custom URL displayed, you’ll notice that the link includes a “/c”.
This can actually be removed and enable the link to still work. The point of removing the “c” will help make the link even more user-friendly.
