Logic – Translators, Level Shifters

Logic translator or level shifter ICs are devices used to pass information between digital logic devices that are operating from different/incompatible supply voltages, or which implement different signaling methods. Examples might include the connection of a digital-output sensor requiring a 5 V supply to an FPGA with a 3.3 V I/O supply, or converting between single-ended signaling methods like CMOS or TTL and differential techniques, such as PECL or LVDS.

Description

Most of our customers love using the Arduino for prototyping, design, and invention but find themselves stuck when trying to connect the Arduino to the latest sensors, displays, controllers, interfaces, etc. as they are almost all 3.3V logic these days. We try to solve this problem by having all our breakout boards be 5V compatible or when that’s not possible, including a level shifter chip but there are still thousands of tempting devices out there.

This chip solves the problem of how to interface 3.3V logic devices to a 5.0V logic chip such as the Arduino. Most 3.3V devices do not like being run with 5V signals and can be damaged or flaky. The 74LVC245 is designed so that even when it runs at 1.8V, it still happily accepts 5V signals in one pin and converts it to a lower logic level on the opposite pin. This chip is only for digital signals, it doesn’t convert analog signals (you need an op-amp for that). It has 8 pipes it can convert but it won’t work with bi-directional/pull-up based devices such as I2C or 1-Wire. It does work great for SPI, Serial, Parallel bus, and other logic interfaces.

Using it is simple. We suggest checking out the 74LVC245 datasheet for details but essentially: connect VCC to your logic level you want to convert to (say 3.3V), Ground connects to Ground. Wire OE (output enable) to ground to enable the device and DIR (direction) to VCC. Then digital logic on the A pins up to 5V will appear on the B pins shifted down to the VCC logic.

Translator ICs

Translator ICs (integrated circuits) also known as level shifters, are semiconductor devices on a circuit that provide the translation of electrical signals from one voltage or one logic level to another. This allows for compatibility with other ICs that have different voltage requirements such as TTL and CMOS. Without these ICs, signals that cross voltage levels would be sampled incorrectly.

How do translator ICs work?

Translator ICs provide an interface between components that operate at different voltage levels. They can shift from low to high voltage and vice versa. Either up or down logic level translation is accomplished through the selection of power supply levels VDD (Voltage Drain Drain) and VCC (Voltage Common Collector). The VCC level sets the input signal levels while VDD selects the output voltage levels.

Types of translators IC’s

IC translators are offered with a variety of a different number of pins, translation methods, package types such as SOIC SOT-23, VSSOP and different levels of logic.

Another type of translator that is available is I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) translators. These are a multi-master to multi-slave two-wire serial bus standard that enables serial communications at a number of bit rates. I2C translators signalling is made up of an individual signal of data that carries logic levels that get validated by a clock signal. Both signals that are transmitted are bi-directional.
